Number 302. This is a vintage 1944 Whitcomb diesel donated to the HRS by the U.S. military in Hawaii which formerly used it for hauling supplies and ammunition. This engine very likely hauled the huge 2700 pound shells that were used by U.S. Navy battleships in World War II, Korea and Vietnam Wars. The 300 horsepower, 45 ton diesel electric is today used primarily to haul passenger and for work train details when working on tracks. |
